A-Rod Triple Patch from the WBC

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Just picked this up this 2006 Exquisite Alex Rodriguez Triple Patch #’d 17/25 for my personal collection. The patches are from A-Rod’s World Baseball Classic Jersey. Sick sick sick flag patch in the middle:

Topps Sterling Switcheroo!

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Here’s a really unfortunate pair of mixed up patches on some otherwise awesome 2007 Topps Sterling Jumbo Swatches. I’m guessing that the people at Topps who made these cards don’t know that much about baseball.

Chien-Ming Wang Jumbo Swatch ErrorTom Seaver Jumbo Swatch Error

Obviously, the Yankees/Mets patches got switched in the Chien-Ming Wang Jumbo Swatch #’d 6/10 and Tom Seaver Jumbo Swatch #8/10. Sorry I couldn’t get a clearer pic of the Wang (teehee). The Wang still ended up selling for $124.08, even though it has a Mets patch instead of the correct Yankees patch.

Anatomy of a Fake Patch

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

This post is aimed at newer collectors who are starting out in the hobby. As we all know, patch cards are hugely popular because of their scarcity and general eye appeal. Oversized, multi-colored logo patches fetch huge premiums on eBay.

Unfortunately this has led to a large number of Fake Patches. Unscrupulous patch fakers will insert nicer looking patches into cards in order to jack up the prices. This is especially common with cards with large patch windows, such as the Absolute Memorabilia Jumbo Patches.

If a patch looks too good to be true, it probably is. You want to be careful, so here are some things to watch out for:

As far as letter patches go, this is one of my favorites

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Brodeur182 from the Bench turned up this “letter” patch. I’ve definitely never seen one of these before:

Apostrophe Patch

It ended up selling for $100.03!!! Now I’m not too familiar with Terry O’Reilly, but I’m pretty sure his other letter patches aren’t selling for that much. Must be lots of Irishmen wanting to spell out their last names that drove up the price.

Alex Rodriguez SP RC

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

From time to time I’m going to post some of the cards from my personal collection so you guys can see what I’m into. I’m a big Yankees fan, so we’ll start it off with my favorite player, Alex Rodriguez, Mr. April himself.

1994 SP - His best “true” rookie card and condition sensitive. 1,027 graded BGS 9 out of 9,971 submissions.

I have another raw version of this card and it actually looks like its in better condition than the BGS 9. When I get enough cards together I’m going to send it in to be graded.

Vintage Yankee Bat Barrel Cards

Friday, February 15th, 2008

One of my collecting goals for this year and beyond is to get my hands on a game used bat barrel card. Unfortunately for me, bat barrel cards are extremely rare and expensive, but they sure are pretty.

While searching for affordable examples on eBay, I turned up these awesome (and completely unaffordable) vintage Bat Barrels of two Yankee Legends.

I don’t know what price the seller of the Mantle expects it end at, but he’s asking $265 for insurance and shipping…
