Fake David Ortiz Jumbo Patch?

March 11th, 2008 by Alex

Tell me what you think about these David Ortiz 2007 Topps Sterling Jumbo Swatches #’d 10/10.
The World Series Patch is on eBay right now (See Auction here).

I still have some doubts that this is a fake patch. There are two sets of Ortiz Jumbo Swatches in 2007 Topps Sterling, each #’d to ten. Example:

David Ortiz 3David Ortiz 4

However, as you’ll notice the pictures on the cards are different in the two sets. Now is it possible that Topps mistakenly used the same card template in both of the 10/10 cards? Well, we’ve already seen their quality control in this set. So the jury is still out in my eyes. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions. What do you guys think?

Here is my quote from the Beckett message boards, I would have at least expected a response from the author of this site.
That is my card for sale. I purchased it from a collector in the area along with several other Ortiz jumbo patches from the same set. There is 2 other cards with the world series logo and several others with with the front letters of the jersey. I will scan them when I have time and post the different versions.
There is a small indentation on the cards lower left. It is not a crease. Many of the other Sterling jumbos I have seen and 2 others I have, also have this. Not sure why. I have throughly inspected every patch card I purchase/purchased and they show no signs of tampering. Did I see this card pulled from the pack? No. Was I confident enough to purchase it for my own collection or re-sale without worrying that it may be counterfeit? Yes.
I spent a long time collecting patch cards for my personal collection and still have many that will never see eBay. Hell, I once had a signature that included every fake patch seller on eBay, but took it down due to constant threats and viruses being emailed to me. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or post here.

Sorry if you think I’m accusing you of something. I never said it was definitively fake. But it is at least questionable enough to discuss. I have pictures of all the Ortiz jumbos from that set that have appeared on eBay so far, but obviously if you can share pictures of other cards featuring the same patch from that set it will go a long way in proving its authenticity and I’ll be happy to update my post to show them. The post on the Beckett post is buried and i thought it would be best if i didn’t respond and bump it the front page until any more scans come in.

    Alex,

Never thought you were accusing me of anything. I would like to see the pics you have of the ortiz’s from ebay and any other Sterling jumbos pics you have saved. I have purchase quite a few of these cards for re-sale outside of ebay on other trading sites and from some people in the PDX to SEA area. I am completely against fake patch sellers as well, if I have purchased items that are non authentic you can bet that I will go after the original seller as much as possible. Please email me so we can discuss this further, I would be glad to share the scans I have with you via email and let you decide for yourself.
