For those keeping score, that’s Topps: 1, UD: 0
January 30th, 2008 by AlexAnother box break for your viewing pleasure:
Much better than my previous debacle of a box break.
My regular readers (all 3 of you) know by now that I’m pretty obsessed with Topps Sterling. Exhibit A and Exhibit B (Exhibits C,D,E and F coming soon!). So I finally decided to put my money where my mouth is and pick up a box.
The Play-by-Play
Feeling as excited as a small child at Christmas, I revealed the player name to find…
Mr. Barry Bonds
Let’s just say I’m not exactly a fan. On top of that, Bonds is the most common player box in Topps Sterling and the Barroid didn’t sign too many cards so chances of getting an auto are slim.
Here are the numbers on Bonds boxes in Topps Sterling:
Relic Boxes - 1829 (96.0% chance)
Auto Boxes - 76 (3.99%)Jumbo Swatch (Any) - 20 (1.05%)
Jumbo Swatch - 10 (0.52%)
Jumbo Swatch (Auto) - 10 (0.52%)Bat Barrel - 4 (0.21%)
One of One’s (Excluding Mystery Packs) - 175 (9.19%)
Odds are not in my favor at this point. I’m hoping for an auto or a Jumbo Swatch or a game used syringe, but I’m much more likely to find a bunch of bat pieces and single colored jerseys.
And the Hit is…..
1/1 Quad Patch! The Card Gods smile upon me!
Some nice pieces in there. The second patch is 4 colors believe it or not. There is literally like one orange thread in the bottom left corner. I would call it more like 3.1 colors.
So I’m pretty happy with that. I probably won’t make my money back though. There are a ton of Bonds Sterling 1/1’s on eBay right now so I’m going to wait a few months to let the supply thin out a bit before selling it.
On to the Mystery Pack! Obviously I want to pull a 1/1 letter patch, which are my favorite cards of the year, but I’m not expecting much. I guess I’ll be happy with anything thats not white suede.
Mr. October, Reggie Jackson Burgundy #’d 12/14. Its not white suede so I beat the odds. I’m pretty happy with that.
Well, nothing for my PC out of this box.
The big hit was a guy that I really dislike, but it was a 1/1 so I guess I can’t complain.
The final verdict: Nice Box*, with an asterisk. heh.
More Topps Sterling Breaks on the way!
Stay tuned to see how Topps treats me on the second go ’round.

Nice break. I wish Topps still had rights to make Jackie Robinson cards. No telling how much I would pay to get my hands on a Jackie Robinson Topps Sterling box! Maybe someday! -Jason
